Open-Source Power Take-Offs & Patents

Innovations by John Clark Hanna — freely shared to accelerate clean ocean energy.

I founded Hanna Wave and Tidal Power Drives to design efficient Power Take-Off systems for the world’s wave and tidal developers.

After years of work and two granted U.S. patents, I realized that time is running short.

Climate Change is now at a tipping point — perhaps beyond reversal.

So instead of waiting for the slow patent process, I’m releasing my latest technologies as open-source, available to all with proper citation. Anyone with the vision and skill to develop them is welcome to build upon this work.

Why These Inventions Are Open to All

“We have to act now to protect Earth’s ability to sustain life. I will consult with any developer to help make this happen.”

— John Clark Hanna

John chose to release both designs openly so researchers and engineers worldwide can adapt them quickly for renewable-energy projects without licensing barriers.

His goal: speed collaboration, not competition.

Coaxial Power Take-Off (Tidal-Wave Drive)

Provisional Patent 63/420,846 (abandoned)

Tidalgen cover

Abstract (Condensed):
A novel coaxial drivetrain supporting five major wave-energy systems — surface and subsurface buoys, platform and shore-based installations, bi-directional tidal converters, and OWC air turbines. Dual rotors share a single axis and mechanically rectify bi-directional flows into one-way rotary motion. No comparable coaxial drivetrain exists for marine applications.

How It Works — Key Concepts

  • Dual rotor system with one-way bearings
  • Converts reversing water or air flows to continuous rotation
  • 90-degree drive-line offset keeps generator dry and free-flowing

Two rotors turn in opposite directions inside the same housing. No matter which way tides or waves move, one rotor always drives the generator while the other freewheels — producing smooth, steady power.

Mono-radial Closed Loop Drive

Provisional Patent: 62/708,462 (expired)

open-end config.

Abstract (Condensed):
A pneumatic primary drive activated by the up-and-down motion of waves. Bi-directional air flows are mechanically converted into one-way rotation by hinged flappers inside a sealed circular casement. Because the loop is closed, air pressure and velocity remain balanced — yielding higher efficiency than open OWC systems.

How It Works — Key Concepts

  • Two V-shaped hinged flappers redirect air flows
  • Closed loop design eliminates pressure loss
  • One moving part / clean pneumatic drive
generator, is a disc-shaped, low-speed, axial-flux, iron-less, brushless, three phase AC machine. It has a multi-pole magnet rotor with a thin air gap between the magnets and copper stator windings. The output of the wye-wound stator windings is rectified to DC and the PM rotor is directly driven by the wave or tidal converter's driveline. No gearbox is required. The new generator design has minimal electrical and mechanical drag on the WEC's powertrain.

Think of it as an air wheel that spins steadily even though the waves beneath it rise and fall. Its sealed loop captures every push and pull of air, keeping motion balanced and continuous.

Two Paths to Clean Power

table comparison

“Both PTO systems can reward anyone who invests time and resources to bring these ideas into the global market.”

Both technologies described above were initially meant to become U.S. Utility Patents. But the patent process is ponderous and time consuming and time is running out. Climate Change is now at a tipping point.  It may already be too late to reverse the pending catastrophe.  So, I have decided to offer both of my inventions as 'open-source' technologies.  With the appropriate citation, they are freely available to developers around the world. The coaxial drivetrain is new for wave and tidal energy, but the converters that are driven by my new coaxial system are common, proven technologies.  The second open-source technology being offered, is my Monoradial Drive.  It has been validated by a DOE-funded study using computational fluid dynamic analysis.  Both PTO systems have the potential to reward anyone who invests time and resources to bring these ideas into the global market.  It is my hope that these concepts will be adopted by others who feel as I do.  We have to act now in order to protect Earth's ability to sustain life.

I will consult with any developer to help make this happen.
